Katrien is active in the area of energy sector integration as a senior project manager for the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB). She leads the EU project FaStGO (Facilitating Standards for Guarantees of Origin) as service to the DG ENER. This project gathers experts from AIB, RECS International, Ergar, Hinicio, EEX, CertiQ, Gaia and the European Biogas Association facilitating the standardization process for GO’s based on the Renewable Energy directive 2018-2001 (REDII). Before that she worked with the Flemish energy regulator in Belgium where she coordinated the Flemish system of Guarantees of Origin, the supervision on electricity origin disclosure by suppliers, and the renewable energy support certificate system. She was the architect and coordinator of online tools like a supplier origin comparator and a consumer ‘greencheck’. She led the design of Flemish legislation on implementation of article 19 of the European renewable energy directive 2018/2001, including developing GOs for gas and for heating and cooling, and was project leader for the implementation of it. As EECS professional reviewer, she audited the national implementation of the GO system in 8 European countries.
In AIB in 2018 and 2019 she was the chairperson of the AIB working group which expanded the European Energy Certificate System with a scheme for gas certificates.
The not-for-profit Association of Issuing Bodies has as its mission statement “guaranteeing the origin of European energy”.
AIB has developed and operates a standardised system for energy tracking: the European Energy Certificate System – “EECS”. Its 27 member organisations are responsible for issuing guarantees of origin and other certificates in their respective domain.
In 2019, more than 600 million Guarantees of Origin for electricity were transferred across national borders throughout Europe in an automated and reliable way through the AIB hub.
